What is liver cancer?
Liver cancer refers to the growth and spread of malignant (cancerous) cells in the liver. The liver is an essential organ located in the upper right part of the abdomen, responsible for several crucial functions in the body, including detoxification, metabolism of nutrients, and the production of proteins necessary for blood clotting.

There are two primary types of liver cancer:
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC): This is the most common type of liver cancer and originates in the hepatocytes, which are the main functional cells of the liver. HCC is often associated with underlying liver diseases, such as cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis B or C infection, or alcohol-related liver damage.
  • Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: This type of liver cancer starts in the bile ducts within the liver. It is less common than HCC but can still be quite aggressive.
Treatment in the early stages provides the best chance of cure.
What are the symptoms of Liver Cancer?

The symptoms of liver cancer can vary depending on the stage of the disease and its progression. In the early stages, liver cancer may not cause noticeable symptoms, which is why regular medical check-ups and screenings for individuals at risk are important for early detection. In fact, the majority of patients with liver cancer have no symptoms. It is very often detected by chance as a result of an ultrasound test or CT scan for other unrelated problems.

However, as the cancer advances, the following symptoms may develop:

  • Abdominal Pain

  • Unexplained Weight Loss

  • Jaundice

  • Fatigue

  • Loss of Appetite

  • Nausea of Vomitting

  • Enlarged Liver or Spleen

  • Swollen Legs

  • Pale Coloured Stools

  • Itchy Skin

  • Easy Bruising or Bleeding

  • Changes in Bowel Habits

Suffering from any of these symptoms?
What treatments are available for Liver Cancer?
The choice of treatment for liver cancer depends on several factors, including the stage of the cancer, the patient's overall health, and the underlying liver condition. Treatment options for liver cancer can include:
  • Resection: Surgical removal of the tumor and a portion of the healthy liver tissue around it. This is often an option for early-stage liver cancer when the tumor is small and localised.
  • Liver transplant: In some cases, a liver transplant may be recommended, especially when the liver cancer is confined to the liver and a suitable donor organ is available.
  • Ablation therapies (Microwave, Radiofrequency, Ethanol, Cryotherapy)
  • Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE)
  • Transarterial radioembolization (TARE)
  • Targeted Therapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Clinical Trials
  • External beam radiation therapy (EBRT)
  • Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)
